With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers
are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season
so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Chelsea close in on
Asmir Begovic…
Chelsea have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of
Asmir Begovic as Stoke City are closing in on the signing of Shay Given
which will pave the way for the Bosnian to complete his move to Stamford
Bridge, according to the Mirror.
The Blues are on the look out for another goalkeeper to replace Petr
Cech following his move to Arsenal last week and Begovic has emerged as a
key target for Jose Mourinho in recent days.
The Guardian
reported last week that the Premier League champions had set their
sights on the Bosnian star and were lining-up a fresh offer after seeing
their opening £6m bid rejected by Stoke City.
Begovic has one year left on his contract so the Potters aren’t in a strong bargaining position but the Mirror
claim they want around £9m for the player, so it looks like Chelsea
will have to up their bid if they want to land the 28-year-old this
summer.
But they’ve been handed a real boost as it looks like Shay Given is
on the verge of moving to the Britannia Stadium as Begovic’s
replacement, so his arrival would clear the way for the former
Portsmouth player to move to Stamford Bridge.
The Express
claim that Given is having his medical with Stoke today so his move
should be wrapped-up fairly soon, and with the Veteran stopper likely to
act as understudy to Jack Butland next season, Begovic would be free to
join Chelsea once they agree a fee.
If the Blues can get a deal agreed, I think Begovic will be an
excellent signing as he’ll provide experienced back-up for No.1 Thibaut
Courtois next season after proving to be one of the most consistent
keepers in the division since moving to Stoke in 2010.
